Grown-Ups Can Get Lice Too- How to Prevent Getting Lice (As an Adult)

by Paula Surdo 07 Nov 2023

Head-lice… they’re a real headache, aren’t they?

Common symptoms include: difficulty sleeping, red bumps on your scalp, a tickly feeling across the scalp and small white objects appearing in your hair.

If you’re reading this then you probably know the struggle all too well.

In fact, the only thing worse than getting head-lice is getting head-lice as an adult.

But the truth is, head-lice are actually pretty common amongst adults. More so than you would think. The only difference is that us grown-ups feel less comfortable talking about it.

You see, lice shame is an incredibly common feeling that affects most of us. It occurs because of the social stigma surrounding head-lice, nits and scalp health.

There is an idea that lice and nits are caused by bad hygiene, and while this is untrue, the mere thought of getting lice or talking about lice publicly is shudder-inducing, and has the bravest of us absentmindedly itching our scalps.

You’re probably starting to itch right now.

But we’re here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be this way.

Here are some important tips to help you prevent getting head-lice or nits in the future.

Because, whether you’re 6 or 60, lice don’t discriminate.

  • Limit Head-to-Head Contact

Contrary to popular belief, lice don’t jump, they crawl. That makes it difficult (but not impossible) for lice to find a new host without head-to-head contact.

Don’t make it easy for them. Always remember to limit head-to-head contact with potentially-infected people or children wherever possible.

Don’t let the lice win!

  • Think Twice Before Sharing Clothing

It’s less common, but it’s a very real possibility. Head-lice are known to spread by sharing clothing or belongings.

That really nice jumper your friend said she’d lend to you?

Is it worth the risk?

  • Relax, But Only a Little!

We’re getting very strict at this point, but there’s a reason for that.

Leaning back on someone else’s bed, pillow, carpet or the waiting room chair might seem tempting…

And yet, in a few days when you’re scratching, you might wish you hadn’t done it.

But if that happens, No More Lice is here to help.

At No More Lice, we are always here to help remove lice from your home and to help you better understand head-lice and scalp health.
